Financial Assistance

The CNMI Scholarship Office (CSO) was established for the purpose of assisting eligible residents who wish to pursue their post-secondary studies from within or outside of the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI).  CSO is committed to assist and offer financial aid for those who wish to develop their skills at the Northern Marianas Trade Institute (NMTI) or any trade institution in the United States or its territories to build the Commonwealth’s economy. 

The CNMI Scholarship Office currently offers the following financial assistance for Academic Year 2018/2019:

  1. EAG Base is for all eligible full-time applicants regardless what their fields of study is.
  2. Commonwealth College Access Grant (CCAG) is available for eligible high school students.
  3. Marianas Employees Financial Aid (MEFA) is designed to assist eligible applicants who are employeed full-time but wish to pursue their post-secondary studies or a certificate and are enrolled part-time at the Northern Marianas College or a accredited online program.
  1. STEM (fields related to Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math)
  2. Business (all related fields)
  3. Education
  4. Casino Management (all related fields)
  5. Nursing
  6. Culinary
  7. Cosmetology
  1. Minimum 3.5 GPA from last award
  2. Enrolled in 15 or more non-repeated or non-developmental courses
  3. Major in one of approved PFoS
  4. Must a Junior or Senior

The above financial aid and amount is highly contingent upon the availability of funds, which are annually appropriated by the CNMI Legislature and available at the beginning of each fiscal year.  Award disbursement for Fall Terms are processed within the week of packages complete; however, due to the timing of funding appropriations, review, and award processing, disbursement time will take anywhere from 3 - 6 weeks.  Awards are all disbursed anywhere from 3-5 weeks after the opening of the fiscal year.  Based on prior academic years, Fall awards are normally released during the last week of October or 1st week of November.  Effective Fall 2017, all Northern Marianas College (NMC) awards are processed through electronic funds transfer and CSO processing time is anywhere from 3-5 business days to NMC.  Recipients are encouraged to follow up with NMC after this period following receiving an "award ready for disbursement" notification from CSO Student Online Portal.

To avail of this financial aid, an applicant must create a student profile and complete the online application.  Please apply no later than the established annual deadlines of July 1st or December 15th.  Applications for semester and quarter calendar systems submitted on July 1st deadline are valid for the entire academic year.

NEW APPLICANTS (First time applicant)

  1. Acceptance Letter 
  2. Official Transcript (e-Script must be e-mailed directly to the CNMI Scholarship Office)
  3. Class Schedule (enrolled in 12 or more credits)
  4. Proof of Citizenship (Valid US Passport)
  5. Proof of CNMI Registered Voter *
  6. Proof of three (3) years consecutive CNMI residency 
  7. Proof of Major

ONGOING (Applicant who was awarded no more than one academic year ago)

  1. Acceptance Letter (Only if changing schools)
  2. Official Transcript (e-Script must be e-mailed directly to the CNMI Scholarship Office)
  3. Class Schedule (enrolled in 12 or more credits)
  4. Proof of Major

RETURNING (Applicant who has not been awarded more one academic year)

  1. Acceptance Letter 
  2. Official Transcript (e-Script must be e-mailed directly to the CNMI Scholarship Office)
  3. Class Schedule (enrolled in 12 or more credits)
  4. Proof of Citizenship (Valid US Passport)
  5. Proof of CNMI Registered Voter *
  6. Proof of three (3) years consecutive CNMI residency
  7. Proof of Major

A notarized Memorandum of Agreement (Promissory Note) must be submitted prior to any awards being released. CSO will only accept one if you are approved for aid.

Voter's Certification Report (VCR) will satisfy #5 & #6 if voted in 2016 election or registered to vote 2016.

NOTE CNMI annual 1040, Employment Verification, Transcripts & Military orders, Voter’s Certification Reports (VCR), and/or Certified Medical/Dental visit dates may be used to proof residency.
